Brazil stands up to US faith-based aid

Way to go, Brazil! Brazil is the first country to publicly refuse aid money from the Bush administration that is tied to ideological restrictions.

Currently, the US, persuaded by fundamentalist religious groups, pressures AIDS aid recipients to promote abstinence and fidelity instead of condoms, and bans aid to any organization with links to abortion rights.

Brazil has specifically refused to condemn prostitution in order to receive US aid money, on the grounds that “such a declaration would be a serious barrier to helping sex workers protect themselves and their clients from infection.”

Nice to see the fourth largest democracy in the world sticking up for reality-based sexual health programs, along with development-friendly intellectual property and free trade programs.
