What to do about all that blood?
From my very first period, I preferred internally-worn products over external ones. I started with tampons, and as soon as I found reusable alternatives like cups and sea sponges, I was delighted.
For a few years, birth control pills made my periods so light that I didn’t need any menstrual products at all. I still use free bleeding tricks on lighter days of my period and often at night.
These are my detailed experiences with different period product options.
Behavioural strategies
- Free Bleeding
- Options I haven’t used: Menstrual extraction, hormonal suppression (e.g., using continuous birth control pills or Depo-Provera)
Reusable products
- Menstrual cups
- Cloth menstrual pads
- Sponge tampons
- My fantasy ideal product
- Also: special panties (e.g., Lunapanties)
Disposable products
Accessories
One of the few books to go into detail about menstrual extraction is Rebecca Chalker's A Woman's Book Of Choices.
Bloodsisters can point you to rants and resources about the politics of menstrual products.
